What is SpaySecure?
SpaySecure is a platform that helps breeders and pet owners manage spay/neuter agreements. When you purchased your pet, you agreed to have them spayed or neutered by a certain date. SpaySecure helps track compliance and provides resources to make the process easy.
Why did my breeder use SpaySecure?
Your breeder uses SpaySecure because they care about responsible pet ownership and want to ensure all pets they place are spayed or neutered. This helps prevent unwanted litters and supports the overall health of the pet community.
What do I have to do?
It's simple: take your pet to a licensed veterinarian for spaying/neutering by your contract deadline, have your vet complete the Vet Attestation Form during the procedure, and submit the completed form along with your veterinary invoice to us. That's it!
Where can I find my contract?
You should have received a copy of your contract via email when you signed it. You can also sign in to your account page to view and download it at any time. If you can't find it, contact us with your email address and we'll resend it to you.
What is my deadline?
Your spay/neuter deadline is specified in your contract. If you're unsure of your deadline, check your contract or contact us with your email address.
The procedure
Is spaying/neutering safe?
Yes, spaying and neutering are among the most common veterinary procedures performed. They have very low complication rates and the health benefits significantly outweigh the minimal surgical risks.
How much does spaying/neutering cost?
Costs vary by location, veterinarian, and the size of your pet. Typically, the procedure ranges from $200-$1,000. Low-cost clinics may offer procedures starting around $100. Check our Find a Vet page for options in your area.
How long is the recovery?
Most pets recover within 10-14 days. Your veterinarian will provide specific aftercare instructions. During recovery, limit your pet's activity and monitor the incision site for any signs of infection.
Will my pet's personality change?
Your pet's fundamental personality will remain the same. The procedure may reduce certain hormone-driven behaviors like aggression, roaming, and marking, but your pet will still be the same loving companion.
Are there alternatives to a traditional spay/neuter?
Yes. A vasectomy for males or an ovary-sparing spay for females prevents reproduction while keeping your pet's natural hormones. It can be done right away, even when your vet prefers to wait on a traditional spay or neuter until your pet is fully grown. Ask your veterinarian whether they offer one.
Documentation and submission
What documentation do I need to submit?
A completed Vet Attestation Form (a simple form your veterinarian signs confirming the sterilization was performed) and an itemized invoice from the clinic showing the procedure date and details. The Attestation Form must include your pet's microchip number as scanned by your vet at the appointment. Please also upload any other supporting documentation you have, such as the clinic's own spay/neuter certificate or your take-home instructions.
Where do I get the Vet Attestation Form?
You can download the Vet Attestation Form from our Forms page. Bring it to your appointment and have your veterinarian complete it during or after the procedure.
What is a microchip and why is it required?
A microchip is a tiny identification chip (about the size of a grain of rice) implanted under your pet's skin by your breeder, usually between the shoulder blades. It carries a unique ID number, and your vet scanning it at the appointment is how we confirm the documentation belongs to your pet rather than another animal. That scanned number is required on the Vet Attestation Form.
What if my pet doesn't have a microchip?
It's uncommon, since nearly all pets from breeders are microchipped before they go home, but it does happen. If your pet has no chip, your veterinarian should implant one, and it can be done at the same visit as the spay/neuter. Ask them to record the new number on the Vet Attestation Form.
How do I submit my proof?
Go to the Submit Proof page on our website, enter your email address, and upload photos or scans of your completed Vet Attestation Form and veterinary invoice.
What happens after I submit?
We'll review your documentation within 10 business days. Once approved, you'll receive a confirmation email and your contract will be marked as complete.
Extensions and issues
Can I get an extension on my deadline?
Extensions are considered on veterinary grounds and require a Request for Extension Form completed and signed by your veterinarian. Download the form, have your vet complete it, and upload it on the Submissions page before your deadline.
What reasons qualify for an extension?
Situations where going ahead with the procedure would jeopardize your pet's life or basic health, as determined by your veterinarian on the Extension Form. If your vet recommends waiting until your pet is fully grown or past a first heat, you may not need an extension at all. Ask about a vasectomy or ovary-sparing spay, which keeps your pet's natural hormones and can be done now. If you need more time for a personal or non-medical reason, book your spay/neuter appointment as soon as possible and submit the appointment confirmation instead, and email support@spaysecure.com so we can note your situation.
What if my vet recommends waiting?
Vets often recommend waiting until a pet is fully grown or past a first heat. You may not need to wait. A vasectomy for males or an ovary-sparing spay for females prevents reproduction while keeping the hormones your vet is concerned about, so it can be done now. Ask your veterinarian whether they offer one. If you would rather wait, ask your vet to complete and sign our Request for Extension Form with the reason and the date they recommend, and upload it with your request.
Does requesting an extension change my deadline?
No. Your current deadline remains in effect unless and until you receive written approval of an extension. If your request is approved, we'll confirm your new deadline by email.
How much extra time can I ask for?
The new date should be the one your veterinarian specifies on the Extension Form. We review your vet's recommended date, not a date you choose yourself.
What happens if my extension is denied?
You'll get an email explaining the decision. Your original deadline still applies, so book the procedure as soon as possible and submit your appointment confirmation so we can plan around your appointment date.
What happens if I miss my deadline?
Your contract sets out what happens if the deadline passes. If you contact us, schedule the procedure, or submit proof, we can usually waive penalties. Reach out as early as you can.
What happens if my pet passes away before sterilization?
We are deeply sorry for your loss. If your pet passes away before the sterilization deadline, please notify us using our Pet Death Notification. You'll need to provide documentation such as vet records or a death certificate.
